Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County, California, at the southeastern extremity of the San Fernando Valley. Burbank, 12 miles (19 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, is known for housing Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Studios, and Nickelodeon Animation Studio, as well as the United States' largest IKEA. The population was 103,340 at the time of the 2010 census.
Many media and entertainment companies, including Warner Bros. Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, The Burbank Studios, Cartoon Network Studios with the West Coast branch of Cartoon Network, and Insomniac Games, are headquartered or have significant production facilities in Burbank, which is tagged the Media Capital of the World and is only a few miles northeast of Hollywood.
Lockheed’s Skunk Works, which built some of the most secret and technologically advanced planes, including the U-2 espionage planes that found Soviet Union missile components in Cuba in October 1962, was based near the Hollywood Burbank Airport.
Burbank is divided into two sections: a downtown/foothill region in the Verdugo Mountains’ foothills, and a flatland component. The community was named after David Burbank, a dentist and entrepreneur from New Hampshire, who founded a sheep ranch in the area in 1867.
