Plantation is a city in Broward County, Florida, in the heart of the state. The city is 8 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, with Lauderhill to the northeast, Sunrise to the northwest, and Davie as its neighbours to the south. Plantation is about 33 miles south of Miami, which is the largest city in the state.
Broward County was relatively unpopulated until the 1940s. Frederick C. Peters, a potato farmer and cattle magnate, purchased 10,000 acres of cheap, undeveloped land from the Everglades Plantation Company in 1941 for $25 per acre (thus the city’s name).
By 1949, a community had been established with 40 residences in the region, and the city of Plantation was formally founded in 1953.
In the decades that followed, the city experienced both gradual and dramatic growth.
