Information about Dana Point, Orange County

Dana Point is a city in Orange County, California, in the United States. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 33,351. It features one of the few harbors along the Orange County coast, and it is a favorite local surfing destination because of easy access via State Route 1.

The city was named after the Dana Point headland, which was named after Richard Henry Dana, Jr., author of Two Years Before the Mast, a book that contained a description of the location. “The only romantic site on the coast,” Dana said of the area, which includes adjacent San Juan Capistrano. Despite Dana’s unfavorable assessment of the anchorage, it is now a developed harbor with a replica of his ship, the Pilgrim. Until it sank in 2020, the Pilgrim was used as a school by the Ocean Institute, which is in the harbor.

Dana Point was a prominent port for ships doing business with nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano in the hide trade. In the 1830s and 1840s, trading reached its pinnacle. Hippolyte de Bouchard, an Argentine sailor, stopped there in 1818 while raiding the mission.
